Certifier renewals are governed by the Building Act 1975 - section 165 through 170.

When is the licence renewed?
Your licence certificate is renewed on the same date every 12 months. A Renewal Notice will be issued approximately 60 days from the date of licence expiry and a new 12 month licence certificate is posted out after renewal assessment and finalisation.

What documents should be supplied at renewal?
The following must be supplied:

  • Copy of current AIBS accreditation certificate or if licensed by way of mutual recognition - evidence that you have maintained accreditation in the first state
  • Evidence of identity - valid photo ID such as drivers licence
  • The original declared renewal form
  • Full payment of renewal fees
  • If endorsed as a private certifier - a copy of a Certificate of Currency from a Professional Indemnity insurer evidencing current cover at the time of renewal - click here

Can the renewal be faxed back?
No - The original declared form along with the required attachments must be received by BSA - the renewal will not be processed unless these are received. Payment may be taken over the phone in order to avoid cancellation for unpaid fees - this must be done prior to the expiry of the licence.

What happens if payment is not received prior to the expiry of the renewal date?
Where payment is not received prior to, or within, three working days of the expiry or due date the licence will be automatically cancelled. You will be provided with a letter or information notice advising of the cancellation.

BSA may refuse to renew a licence and subsequently cancel the licence even if payment has been made - an information notice will be issued.

What should be done if a licence is cancelled?
After cancellation for non payment a new application will have to be submitted along with the payment of the application fee and annual fee - see Certifier Application Process

Can a certifier appeal BSA's decision to cancel?
Appeals should be lodged (in accordance with section 189 of the Building Act) within 20 days of the notice through the Commercial and Consumer Tribunal.
