Does a licence need to be renewed?
Yes - You are required to renew a licence annually. A renewal notice will be mailed out one month prior to the licence due date (mailed to the last notified address). The renewal fee and financial information (not required by fire protection occupational, site supervisor or nominee supervisor licence holders) must be received by 4.30pm on the day the licence expires or the date stated on the renewal notice to avoid suspension of the licence/s.
How much does the renewal cost?
The licence fee for the renewal of your fire protection occupational, site supervisor or nominee supervisor licence is a standard fee but the licence fee for the renewal of a contractor licence will be determined based on the level of your last Allowable Annual Turnover. The fee will be detailed on your renewal notice (also see penalty unit information below). Click here for the current licence fees (renewal fee).
How is a licence renewed?
You can renew your licence in person at any BSA office (see contact us), by mail or over the phone by contacting BSA on 1300 272 272 (you will need your renewal and licence numbers). The licence is renewed once the applicable fee is paid and any required financial information is provided - click here for more information.
Note - If you decide to pay over the phone using BSA's direct debit facility the Direct Debit Request Form must be completed and returned to BSA 24 hours prior to accessing this service. Alternatively, you can pay using a Mastercard or Visa.
Can a renewal date be changed?
Yes - At the time of renewal, licensees who provide a financial report can elect to change their future renewal date by completing the Request to Change Renewal Date form. This allows you to align the renewal date with the end of year financial reporting period (based on age of information that can be provided). The date will be automatically generated. You cannot request a specific date for renewal. BSA has the right to refuse any request to alter a renewal date.
If you elect to change your renewal date, the licence fee for the renewal of the licence will change accordingly.
A renewal date cannot be changed by self certifying licensees (contractors with a turnover less than $300,000) or holders of a nominee supervisor, site supervisor or fire protection occupational licence.
Can licence grade be changed at the time of renewal?
Yes - You can request to change your nominee supervisor or contractor licence grade by providing a completed Change of Licence Grade form with the renewal notice or by phoning BSA on 1300 272 272 and renewing over the phone (you will need your renewal and licence numbers). Where changing from nominee supervisor to contractor grade you will be required to comply with BSA's Financial Requirements for Licensing policy.
If you hold a fire protection occupational or site supervisor licence, you cannot change it at the time of renewal. To change your licence to either a nominee supervisor or contractor grade, you will be required to complete a new application form and meet all of the current application requirements.
What are the financial requirements at renewal time?
You should visit BSA's Self Certifying or Financial Report page which provides information about the financial requirements to renew a licence.
What happens if a renewal is not completed by the due date?
A licence suspension occurs when you fail to pay the renewal fee (including any penalty units) or provide financial information (if required) by the due date. The holder of a suspended licence cannot carry out or undertake to carry out building work at this time (sign contracts, provide quotes, complete work in progress etc). You may be prosecuted for unlicensed contracting if you work while your licence is suspended.
Where a licence is suspended for a period of three months or more it will be cancelled. If a licence becomes cancelled you will have to reapply (see Trade Contractor and Designer or Builder) and meet the licensing requirements at the time of application.
Penalty Units on renewal of licence
If you have been issued with a Direction to Rectify through the course of the renewal year penalty units will be added to the renewal fee. One unit ($100) is applied for every direction issued (up to 10 a year). Refer to Queensland Building Services Authority Act 1991 s37C - Renewal fee increased if directions given. If you do not pay the full renewal amount your licence/s may be suspended or cancelled.
When is the licence card sent?
When a licence is successfully renewed BSA will send a letter confirming the renewal approval and your allowable turnover (where applicable) for the licence year ahead. The licence card will be sent approximately two to three weeks thereafter.
