What is recognition or prior learning (RPL)?
This is a process that formally recognises your skills, knowledge and experience by providing you with a formal qualification. Training and competency assessments are carried out and the qualification you receive, once the process is completed, may be used towards obtaining a licence.

Who requires RPL?
Anyone who needs to apply for a BSA licence but does not hold a formal technical qualification such as:
  • A completed apprenticeship
  • Successful completion of the appropriate course listed on the scope of work
  • Successful completion of an equivalent course for the class of licence (e.g. similar modules)
  • A recognition certificate
  • A qualification or statement of attainment of the required competency issued by an approved authority for the class of licence

Applicants who have a qualification which is not equivalent to the prescribed qualification will require an equivalency assessment. This process will review the competencies of the completed qualification and determine its equivalency. Written confirmation of the qualification status will be provided to the applicant for the purposes of obtaining a licence.

Who carries out RPL or equivalency?
Registered Training Organisations (RTO's) carry out recognition of prior learning for those eligible to undertake this process. An applicant can contact an RTO who can assess against the required competencies to obtain a licence- see Registered Training Organisations and Technical Assessment Organisations Booklet
