Fire Protection Occupational Licensing
BSA's Fire Protection Occupational licensing was introduced on 1 January 2009 to ensure Queensland has the highest standards of building fire safety and to provide an employee or subcontractor with a clear path to becoming a contractor in the Queensland building industry. There was a two year transition period, from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2010. Fire Protection Occupational licensing became mandatory on 1 January 2011. The two year timeframe allowed those impacted by these new laws sufficient time to apply for the relevant fire licence and, where necessary, upgrade their skills to meet the minimum technical qualification.
Any person (including an employee or someone working under a subcontract agreement) who personally performs or supervises fire protection work is required to hold an appropriate licence (see licence scopes of work in sections below). The only practitioners exempt from holding this licence are apprentices, trainees and students. Occupational Licences
A Fire Protection Occupational licence allows the holder to work as an employee or subcontractor to a licensed contractor who holds a fire protection licence of the same class. Where a person wants to contract with homeowners or builders they must hold a contractor grade of licence. To apply for a contractor grade of licence the normal application process will apply and the applicant is required to meet all licensing requirements (see "Contractor or Nominee Supervisor" section below).

The licences listed below are required if you work in the fire protection industry for another licensed fire protection contractor but do not hold a contractor or nominee supervisor licence yourself.
Applying for a Fire Protection Occupational licence
To apply for a Fire Protection Occupational licence you must provide the following:
A completed copy of the Fire Protection Occupational Licensing Application Form
Payment of the Application fee
Proof of identity (certified copy of drivers licence, passport or provision of 100 points Proof of Identity)
Meet the relevant technical requirement (see "Scopes of Work - Fire Protection Occupational licence classes" above)
The original completed application form, along with all the required supporting documentation and appropriate fee, should be mailed to GPO Box 5099, Brisbane, Qld 4001 or lodged in person at the nearest BSA office (see application form for physical addresses). Warning: The original application must be lodged with the BSA but please do not send in any other original documents unless required.
Contractor or Nominee Supervisor
A Fire Protection Contractor licence will allow the holder to contract directly with builders or homeowners, or be the nominee supervisor for a company. The holder of a current BSA contractor or nominee supervisor licence does not have to apply for the occupational licence as well, as long as the scope of work to be undertaken falls within the scope of work of their licence.
